Greetings !
This Spring, the Institute in Community Development will be offering
several training sessions on issues related to community engagement,
social justice work and challenges faced by organizations. The
sessions, some in English some in French, led by experienced trainers
will provide opportunities for skillbuilding, reflection and
inspiration. The first event, a two-day workshop on Oral History will
take place on March 19 and 26, 2009 ; read on for more information on
this event. We hope to see you there !
Practicing Oral History in our Communities
The stories people tell matter. They matter for what they tell us
about the past and for how they connect us to our families, friends,
and greater community. In this 2-day workshop, participants will
receive an introduction to oral history interviewing and digital tools
to help design and carry out their community projects. Day 1 will
focus on the oral history methodology and the ethical issues involved.
In Day 2 participants will learn about digital technologies that are
opening new ways of working directly and easily with interviews. Prior
experience with oral history or digital technology is not necessary.
The workshop will be led by Anna Sheftel and Michael Klassen.
Anna Sheftel is the associate director of the Centre for Oral History
and Digital Storytelling at Concordia University. She came to oral
history through her doctoral research at the University of Oxford,
where she worked with people in Bosnia-Herzegovina to understand their
memory of war.
Michael Klassen is an independent designer interested in oral
histories, how people experience the landscapes they live in, and how
this relates to design. He brings to the workshop a wide range of
digital skills including video and sound editing, webworks, 3D
modeling and animation, and interactive multi-media design.
