As the world teeters on the edge of catastrophic cimate change,
Alberta plunges ahead with uncontrolled development of its fossil
fuels, levelling its northern Boreal forest to get at the oil sands,
and bombing its southern half with tens of thousands of gas wells. In
his best selling and controversial book, William Marsden takes an
unflinching look at the Alberta oil and gas industry. He explains the
increasingly violent geopolitical forces that are gathering as the
world’s gas and oil supply dwindles and the Age of Oil begins its
invevitable slide towads oblivion.
He toured the province, forcefully relating the stories of ordinary
Albertans’ David-and-Goliath battles with corporate and government

(June 2009).

Come with a muzzle or gag to symbolize the effects of SLAPP lawsuits
on freedom of expression !
Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) are a serious
threat to freedom of expression and weaken public debate. These are
lawsuits filed by companies or institutions against individuals or
activist groups, aimed at neutralizing or censuring public criticism
of their activities.
Last fall, Bill 99 (An Act to amend the Code of Civil Procedure to
prevent abusive use of the courts and promote freedom of expression
and citizen participation in public debate), aimed at constraining
such lawsuits, had almost crossed all of the steps required for its
adoption. The calling of elections stopped the process in its tracks.
We ask that the government respect its commitments and adopt an
effective bill before June 2009.
On Thursday, March 5th, at 11:00 am, we will stage a demonstration in
front of the Montreal Courthouse.
We hope to remind our elected officials of the broad consensus in
Quebec that favours he adoption of a bill that will effectively
constrain SLAPP lawsuits. We ask that the model of Bill 99 be retaken,
including the amendments that were requested during consultations last
October.
A strong image is worth a thousand words : come with the most original
muzzle or gag that you can find ! We will provide the media with a list
of the organizations that are supporting our action.

Les poursuites-baillons sont une grave menace pour la liberté
d’expression et mettent en péril le débat public. Elles sont des
actions judiciaires intentées par des compagnies ou des institutions
contre des individus ou des groupes de pression, en vue de les
neutraliser ou de les censurer lorsqu’ils dénoncent publiquement leurs
activités.
En automne dernier, le projet de loi 99 visant à restreindre les
poursuites-baillons (Loi modifiant le Code de procedure civile pour
prévenir l’utilisation abusive des tribunaux et favoriser le respect
de la liberté d’expression et la participation des citoyens au débat
public) avait franchi presque toutes les étapes de son adoption.
La convocation d’élections l’a fait mourir au Feuilleton.
Nous demandons au gouvernement de respecter ses engagements et d’adopter
une loi efficace avant juin 2009.
Le jeudi 5 mars, nous manifesterons devant le palais de justice. Nous
souhaitons rappeler aux députés qu’il existe un large consensus au
Québec pour adopter une loi efficace contre les poursuites-baillons.
Nous demandons que le modèle du projet de loi 99 soit repris, en
incluant les amendements réclamés lors des consultations d’octobre
dernier.
