Toronto Delegation to World Social Forum Reports Back

Wednesday 12 February 2003, by The World Social Forum of Toronto

After massive anti-war demonstrations during the day, theTorontodelegation to the World Social Forum will report on the development of growing movements of resistance to war and corporate led globalization on Saturday, February 15 at7:30 pm.

Under the banner "Another World is Possible" the 2003 World Social Forum brought together 100,000 people from around the world to explore people’s alternatives to corporate-led globalization and to organize a world-wide anti-war movement.

The World Social Forum - this year held from Jan 23 to Jan 28 inPorto Alegre Brazil-began as a counterpoint conference to the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland held at the same time, but has grown into a huge meeting of
the anti-globalization movement.

"The World Social Forum provides an amazingly open forum where any group from anywhere in the world can attend and organize their own events as part of the program. There is no filtering of political opinion beyond a broad, shared commitment to opposition to neo-liberalism. Here, participation is the key in the exploration of alternatives, not something to be contained or feared." says Janet Conway on her return from the World Social Forum.

"A large contingent fromToronto attended the World Social Forum. Their experiences show that far from being dead, the anti-globalization movement is larger and more global than ever before." says Pauline Spencer an organizer of
the Toronto Social Forum.

"The energy and passion of the World Social Forum is contagious. This new form of social movement is spreading rapidly throughout the world with social forums being held recently in Europe, Asia and here in Canadain Quebec City, Victoria, Ottawa, Vancouver and Hamilton with others being incubated as we speak. The Toronto Social Forum to be held March 28-30 is shaping up to be one of the biggest events this year." added Pauline Spencer.

Participants from the World Social Forum will report back in an evening of music and celebration:
