The RED (Research, Education and Development) research portal supports communities, activist networks, and social movements throughout South Africa. RED, which was developed with the help of Alternatives, aims to create a network that uses different abilities and perspectives to develop participative models of research, education, and information networks.
RED has contributed to the development of web sites for a host of organisations that are playing increasingly larger roles in South Africa, such as the Anti-Privatisation Forum (www.apf.org.za), the Anti-Eviction Campaign (www.antieviction.org.za), and the Indaba Social Movement (www.globalindaba.org.za). During the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development, (Aug. 26 - Sept. 4) RED will concentrate its efforts on presenting critical and independent information about the Summit and the social justice and environmental issues surrounding it. Alternatives interns are also on the ground helping to build this network, ensuring that it extends to the whole of South African society.
