Since 2003, Alternatives supported many civil society organizations in Iraq which lead to the creation of the main national network called: the Iraqi Democratic Future Network - IDFN. Activities are taken place to strengthen human rights, to promote non-violence and gender equality as well as to insure minority rights.

The consolidation of the civil society is absolutely essential for the future well-being of Iraq. After the American invasion and occupation, Iraq has been split among different clans, and ethnic or religious groups. With the departure of US soldiers, a dynamic civil society is crucial to establish peace and to engage citizens in public affairs.

In 2007, the IDFN has had interesting results in order to promote peace and social justice with a national campaign to promote Iraqis widows rights (in French only) that was really successful.

In 2009-2010, Alternatives will organise international tours with members of the IDFN in Europe, Canada and the USA to explain why the consolidation of the civil society is absolutely essential for the future well-being of Iraq.
