Since 2003, Alternatives supports many community groups in Iraq. Its work led to the creation of a network of progressive organizations : the Iraqi Democratic Future Network (IDFN).

This year, in collaboration with IPAM (AlterInter Paris) and with the financial support of CIDA and the European Commission, Alternatives is launching a new two year program designed to increase the Network’s activies in order to strenghen human rights, peace, gender equality and minority rights in Iraq. Last year, IDFN had promising results with its campaign on widow’s rights that was put in place in 2007.

IDFN is presently bringing together 14 organizations from all over Iraq.

In 2009-2010, Alternatives will provide members of IFDN an opportunity for a tour in Europe in order to hightlight civil society’s role in stabilizing and developping Iraq. The first stop is in Rome, where AlterInter will organize a conference with the italian NGO Un ponte per. The meeting will take place between March 25-31, 2009. It will focus on the new solidarity links necessary for the Iraq’s civil society.
