(A Sindhi word meaning ‘mound of the dead), 21 March 2006
Another world is possible.
On the mound of the dead
I frantically dig out the city
which lay peacefully
under the quiet banks of the Indus.
I scooped out their bedrooms,
their streets and private baths
with claws of curiosity, lust.
The city lay naked in front of me;
Vulnerable, fragile, helpless;
Proud, majestic, silent.
That was a world
built on the mound of its dead.
I walk away from the five thousand years old immaculately
with fear of getting buried under its weight,
dreaming of a different world.
