Fondación Antoño Jimenez por la Naturaleza y el Hombre (FANJ)
The ’Fondation Antonio Nunez Jimenez de la Naturaleza y el Hombre’, created on May 16, 1994 is a scientific, cultural, civic non-governmental organisation dedicated to the research and promotion of environmental protection, using a socio-cultural approaches. As part of its environmental education mandate, the foundation contributes to the creation of a social conscience concernced with environmental harmony and the creation of local solutions to environmental problems. As part of its sustained urban development program, the Foundation supports urban development projects such as permaculture gardens, an approach that encourages more diversity in orgnanisms by replicating natural ecosystems, all while finding ways to reduce inputs and effort on the part of agriculturalists.

Internship objectives:
– Allow young Québecers to share in a meaningful international solidary experience
– Support our Cuban partners in their urban agriculture work
– Undertake public awareness activities to sensitize Quebecers to food security issues in Cuba
– Promote urban agriculture and ecological practices, in the North as well as in the South
– Foster an opportunity for interns to integrate into the daily routine of an international cooperation organization
– Share the Alternatives’ knowledge and best practice in urban agriculture, especially with regards to hydroponics and permaculture
Summary of field activities:
– Consolidate and reinforce a community garden by ecological urban agriculture tools and techniques and training cuban actors in urban agriculture
– Number of project participants : 8 interns and 1 accompanier
– Overseas placement : From 15 June 2009 to 14 August 2009 (60 days)
– Pre-departure training : From 10 November 2008 to 15 June 2009
