In 2002 Alternatives assited in the setting-up of the research and popular education group Research and Education in Development (RED). Alternatives activities included setting-up of a web-based portal for research and networking to be utilised by South-African social movements. Using Drupal technology, this portal allows community researchers in social sciences to publish material, to exchange different points of view, and to follow the key issues raised by Southern African social movements.
The site made it possible, in 2002, to carry out coverage of the events surrounding the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The site contains many articles on developmental issues and on reducing poverty both in South Africa and internationally.
